Waterbeds enable healthy and comfortable sleep

Initially developed in the 1960s, waterbeds were popular options in the consumer market due to their unique and stylish design. Over time, they have evolved into comfortable sleeping surfaces with durability, strength and a host of health benefits.

Modern technology has been used to offer a wide variety of options for waterbeds. Their quality and stability has been improved through the use of multiple layers of fiber and holding chambers within the mattress and bed. Because we spend so many hours sleeping, choosing a healthy and comfortable sleeping surface can go a long way towards improving the quality of your everyday life.

What are waterbeds?

Simply put, a waterbed is a bed or mattress that is filled with water. The original design of waterbeds involved a simple mattress that contained water in a single chamber. As you would sit on one end of the bed, the water would erupt into waves and flow along the entire mattress until it stabilized.

Future models of waterbeds have incorporated wave-stabilizing methods, where fibers and distinct chambers within the mattress are used to restrict the free flow of water. The basic principle still remains the same, where water is the main item used to fill up the mattress. Waterbeds also give you the option of heating the water within the mattress to various temperatures.

Types of waterbeds

There are two main types of waterbeds; hard-sided and soft-sided beds. Hard-sided waterbeds contain a water-filled mattress that is enclosed within a rectangular wooden frame. Since the water is encased in a solid frame, the surface is sturdier.

A soft-sided waterbed consists of a water-filled mattress encased in foam and a fabric casing. The surface of the mattress is therefore more flexible, and can bend/adjust to your body as you sleep.

A healthy option

Waterbeds have been shown to have a variety of health benefits. These include:

Relieving backaches

The water and soft fibers present on waterbeds allow for the back to ease its strain while sleeping. The waterbed can adjust to your posture, helping to relieve pressure from muscles and joints along the back.

Reducing Insomnia

Trouble falling asleep is usually associated with an uncomfortable sleeping experience. A waterbed uses soft and comfortable materials to help you fall deep asleep and wake up feeling fully rested.

Preventing Bedsores

Waterbeds are a great remedy against bedsores; which are caused by the muscles getting stiff in a fixed position. The flexibility of water-filled mattresses adjusts naturally to your tosses and turns while sleeping, helping to cool and comfort the muscles.
